The pattern with WHAT (WH- relative clause):
WHAT clause + BE + phrase
Phrase + BE + WHAT clause (← inverted pseudo-cleft - reverses the order of the two
constituents); SVC
The emphasis comes after the verb BE
What John gave to Mary were flowers. Pseudo-cleft
Flowers were what John gave to Mary. Inverted pseudo-cleft (but stil a pseudo-cleft)
A personal organiser is what you need. ← simply not so common; It also does not conform to the basic
distribution of CD
What you need is a personal organiser. ← conforms to the basic distribution of CD (end focus) ↓
