I beg you please, just walk away,
though I can't bear to see you go.
Don't throw your life away and stay;
I beg you please, just walk away,
Why build a dream that's lost its way?
And if you plead, I shall say no.
I beg you please, just walk away,
though I can't bear to see you go.

PROSE
STRUCTURALISM
becoming known at the end of 19th century when first scholars and scientists appeared
structure = entity made of certain elements (basic unit: element)
every single element is different with special individual features
but by putting all elements together to form a structure, those elements get properties that they don’t have
individually (those compound elements get new, certain properties)
each structure has certain rules which have to be followed and according to which it must behave
everything that is around us is a structure (class, paintings etc.)
material of literature: language
structuralism deals with patterns and the quality of a narrator
the father of linguistic structuralism: Ferdinand de Saussure
1. FERDINAND DE SAUSSURE
a Swiss linguist
how literature functions within language
Saussure examined the language as a whole rather than individual parts
»
langue = virtual system of a language (all words that exist in a language) and this system is ruled by
syntax and morphology
»
parole = concrete use of a language (a part of a language = subsystem of a langue)
practically we don’t use langue (we were given langue at school) but we use parole (according to education,
the purpose of a communication or the effect that we want to make)
the linguistic sign = the basic element of a language
